A Special Woman Indeed

Cupid

District 11

Inti and his wife, Mama Quilla didn’t stick in the same place for long. Months ago, they set shop on the tallest of the emerald, flat-top mountains of District 11. The summits were so tall each had its own climate. One mesa was snow-capped. The next was pounded by rain. An extreme heatwave lingered on another. The local tribes called these table-top mountains, Tepui, meaning, “House of the gods.”

The inhabitants of this District 11 believed that to impress Inti and Mama Quilla, they had to climb the mountain wherever the gods were presently residing. Successful meet or not, angels always returned the villagers to their home with the utmost care as per the instructions of the rulers of the district.

Recently this changed. Since Inti and Mama Quilla had moved to this area, anyone going on such a quest went missing, with rumours of man-eating creatures getting the blame. When Zeus got wind of this, he sent the brothers, Eros and Cupid, with their mother Venus, to see what they could find. Historically, the brothers would be the last used by the House of Zeus as spies. Cupid was a hopeless romantic, while Eros was about the sexual conquest to his name with quite a list of bedded angels much to his brother’s disgust.

Zeus had officially sent Venus and her sons as emissaries to Inti and Mama Quilla’s court in hopes of winning their support for his eventual crowning as king of this blue planet. Cupid was sure his father had lost his mind. It was all silly political crap as far as he was concerned. Ever since the portal closed, most angels either were going crazy in the head or hungered for power. Paranoia and deceit spread like plagues. The Order was becoming a reflection of the humans. Or were the humans mirroring the immortals?

Cupid had no interest in being a spy for Zeus. He would leave the buttering-up to Eros and their mother while he took in the pleasing scenery of the area. The flat-top mountains shadowed the rolling hillsides and sequoia forests. The lakes were so calm it looked like he could walk on them. In light armour with a sheathed sword he seldom used, Cupid preferred using his bow and quiver. In it were magical arrows plucked from his wings that would possess whatever force he imagined them to have.

He dropped in on a village, where the chief welcomed him with open arms while the inhabitants kept their distance. Why were they looking at him like they hated him when they had never seen him before?

“Forgive them,” the chief said. “They’re weary of your kind these days.”

“I’m not much of a fan of my kind these days either.”

“Your hair, it sparkles like real gold.” He touched Cupid’s hair.

“Hey now, don’t be getting any funny ideas.” Cupid winked, pretending he was going to unsheathe his sword in defense of his angelhood.

The chief cackled good-heartedly at Cupid’s sense of humour, and for hours they sat
